The Full Story...

What We Do

We are the My Medic service based at Cardiff University with the sole purpose of supporting students in medical education.

Mission

Whilst our aim is to support medical students at Cardiff primarily, we are a team of impassioned doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists etc, who want to improve the learning journey for medical students everywhere, through facilitating the sharing of evidence based practice in relation to medical student health and wellbeing.

Vision

We hope that we support students when they need us most. We provide an inclusive and accessible service that is student led and confidential. We offer bespoke support and also signpost to other services who can also be of great help. We work to create a culture whereby all medical students feel comfortable  and safe enough to get in touch when they need any help, support, guidance. Our vision is that all medical schools offer this personalised and bespoke service to their students too.

Approach at Cardiff

The My Medic Learning Development Unit

  • The Professional Services and Support (PSS) team are the people students will first be in contact with and will help to direct and support students through the triage process. The team also aid students in the process of obtaining reasonable adjustments working closely with the University's Student Disability Service (SDS).

  • My MEDIC Advisors offer one to one support for students. This may be a one-off meeting - or meeting over a few weeks/months - to support students with shorter term issues, or maybe meetings throughout the year/course to support students with longer term issues. My MEDIC Advisors ensure students are aware of all of the services/resources available to them and signpost students appropriately, including linking with University Student Services. My MEDIC Advisors also have a great deal of experience in the challenges that UG students in the School of Medicine may face and are able to support students to manage any such issues within the context of their course.

  • We have Occupational Psychologists in the team who are are able to offer students bespoke support with topics such as work/life balance, time management, and study skills with a particular focus on how students can apply these skills in relation to the MBBCh course.

  • We have a Language and Communication Skills expert who is able to offer bespoke support to individual students, or small groups of students, again with a specific focus on language and communication skills in medicine.

We offer a safe and confidential space - either physically or virtually - for students to connect. Cardiff Medical Students get in touch with us here
